Edit: Maybe obsidian?  I haven’t found any yet….

It’s a shadow glitch. If you place a block in the top of it everything will go back to normal. ;)Obsidian can only be created by water hitting a source block of lava, so you probably wouldn’t see it in a column with human interference.
